A water leak is easier to manage when the water stops quickly. A washing-machine hose can fail while you are at work, or a supply connection can drip inside a cabinet before anyone notices. Moen Flo adds a way to detect trouble and shut off the water feeding the home—even when you are not standing next to the valve.
At Kedron Plumbing & Heating, we have been installing more of these systems for homeowners who want that added protection. Below is a before-and-after look at one of our installations, followed by how the shutoff, leak sensors, and battery backup work together.
Before and after: a Kedron Moen Flo installation
The before photo shows the existing copper water piping and pressure regulator inside a wall access panel. In the after photo, you can see the Moen Flo shutoff integrated into that water-line assembly, with the plumbing still accessible through the panel.

This is the part homeowners often do not see when shopping for a smart shutoff: it must fit the actual plumbing. Pipe size, flow direction, the pressure regulator, service access, power, and Wi-Fi coverage all matter. Installation planning should follow the instructions for the selected model and account for any separate irrigation or fire-sprinkler supply.
What does Moen Flo actually do?
The main shutoff installs directly in the home’s water supply. It monitors water use and can identify unusual patterns that may indicate a leak. Depending on its operating mode and settings, it can close the valve automatically. Through the app, homeowners can also check water-use information and control the valve remotely when connected.
That means the system does more than sound an alarm. Closing the valve stops additional supply water from feeding a leak downstream of the device. It can help limit damage to flooring, cabinets, walls, and finished spaces, especially when a problem starts while nobody is home.
Three leak sensors—and room to add more
One package option we offer combines the Moen Flo shutoff with a battery backup and three compatible leak detectors. The detectors go in specific places where escaping water might otherwise go unnoticed. Additional compatible detectors can be added as your home’s coverage needs grow.
Useful locations include:
- Near the water heater.
- Beside the washing machine and its supply connections.
- Under kitchen or bathroom sinks.
- Near a dishwasher or refrigerator water connection.
Placement matters: the sensor or its sensing accessory needs to be where leaking water would reach it.
When a detector senses water, it can trigger the paired Flo shutoff to close the home’s water supply, provided automatic shutoff is enabled and the system has the required connectivity. The detector supplies the local warning; the plumbed-in valve does the actual shutting off. A standalone detector cannot stop the water by itself.
Moen’s detector setup guidance explains pairing multiple detectors and enabling that automatic response.
What the battery backup adds
The backup battery keeps the Flo shutoff powered temporarily when household electricity goes out. Moen rates its current 920-008 backup for up to four hours of operation.
It is separate from the batteries inside the individual leak detectors. It also does not power your router or modem. Internet-dependent alerts, remote controls, and detector communication still need working connectivity; backup power for the valve alone does not keep the entire network online.
A good installation includes setup
Choosing the right valve and connecting the piping are only part of the job. A complete setup should include pairing the devices, naming sensors by location, confirming automatic-shutoff settings, checking the new plumbing connections, and testing the system according to Moen’s instructions. Homeowners should also know how to operate the manual shutoff and respond to an alert.
Automatic protection does not repair a failed fitting or remove water already on the floor. After an alert, locate and address the cause before restoring water. If you already have an unexplained leak, our leak detection and repair service can help with that first.
